Biografia
Secondo la mwdgLex Gundobada, il nonno del re burgundo mwdwGundobado sarebbe stato mweaGundicaro,cite-ref-lex-gundobada-2-0[2] che dunque sarebbe il padre di Gundioco. Secondo mwfqGregorio di Tours, Gundioco apparteneva alla famiglia di mwfgAtanarico, re dei mwfwVisigoti;cite-ref-3[3] una discendenza maschile è improbabile, dunque lo storico Sécretan propose di riconciliare le due informazioni ipotizzando che avesse sposato la sorella di mwhaRicimero.cite-ref-4[4]
Successe al padre Gundecario nel mwig436 e regnò sui Burgundi assieme al fratello, mwiwChilperico I e fu alleato dei mwjaVisigoti.
Nel mwnq453 seguì il re visigoto mwngTeodorico II nella sua campagna contro il re svevo mwnwRechiaro, ottenendo in cambio l'espansione dei territori burgundi nella valle del mwoaRodano.
Nel mwog456, alla morte dell'imperatore di origine gallica mwowAvito, i Burgundi approfittarono della debolezza imperiale per espandersi verso sud, giungendo persino a prendere mwpaLione, che aprì le porte agli invasori. Il nuovo imperatore mwpqMaggioriano, eletto il 1º aprile mwpg457, mosse contro i Burgundi e i Visigoti di Teodorico II, che non ne avevano riconosciuto l'elezione, e li sconfisse, riprendendo Lione.cite-ref-6[6]cite-ref-mitchell-7-0[7] Dopo aver battuto Teodorico II, ad mwrwArles Maggioriano, nel mwsa459, impose la pace a mwsqVisigoti e mwsgBurgundi.
L'imperatore mwtaLibio Severo, successore di Maggioriano e fantoccio del generale mwtqgoto mwtgRicimero (probabilmente cognato di Gundioco), riconobbe ai Burgundi lo status di mwtwmwuafoederati, accettandone anche l'espansione verso sud, oltre la valle della mwuqDrôme sino a raggiungere la valle della mwugDurance; tra il mwuw461 ed il mwva465, Gundioco ebbe persino il rango di mwvqmwvgmagister militum dell'mwvwImpero romano d'Occidente.cite-ref-mitchell-7-1[7] Nel mwxa463, infatti è citato in una lettera di mwxqpapa Ilario:cite-ref-8[8] si trova a mwygVienne e ha ricevuto il titolo di mwywmwzamagister militum dell'mwzqImpero romano d'Occidente, Ricimero; è possibile che il titolo sia stato conferito per aver impedito ad mwzgEgidio, mwzwmagister militum dell'imperatore mwaaMaggioriano, di marciare sull'Italia all'assassinio del suo sovrano per mano di Ricimero e all'elevazione di mwaqLibio Severo (461).
Nel mwaw471 e mwba472, Gundioco fu alleato dell'mwbqimpero romano nel difendere mwbgClermont dai Visigoticite-ref-burgundy-1-1[1].
Alla sua morte, nel mwda473 circa, il regno venne diviso tra i suoi figli, mwdqGundobado, mwdgChilperico, mwdwGundomaro e mweaGodegiselocite-ref-burgundy-1-2[1], che affiancarono lo zio, mwfqChilperico I, nel governo del regno.
